Maruti Suzuki WagonR Review
The #BigNewWagonR is certainly a bigger affair than the one it has replaced. The new Heartect platform based hatchback, Maruti Suzuki WagonR is a safer product from stable. This car has also received new features like smart infotainment system, 2 engine options, and ABS with EBD. Along with new engines, Wagon R automatic has also been introduced with AGS. Space on the inside is also increased with the increase in the overall width of the car to fit 3 people comfortably at the rear. Let’s see how this car is a better WagonR and why you should or shouldn’t purchase it.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Exterior
Tallboy design has always been addressed to this car’s style and with WagonR 2019, the story remains the same. This car is in its original shape, however, a lot of the bits have been changed to suit modern users’ taste. Maruti Suzuki WagonR exterior is now grown up. The car is wider, and longer, though its height has been reduced. It has a new stylish headlight housing which includes indicators and parking lights. The front bumper is a sophisticated unit with an A-shape air dam and fog lamps on either side. The front grille has a zigzag mesh design with centre chrome strip.
The profile is typically WagonR. It looks tall and has its 2-decade old soul right there. The wheels are 13 inches with 155 cross-sections. You may notice bits taken from Vitara Brezza on C-pillar in form of black cladding. The rear is the most interesting part here. This car looks like an MPV from the rear. It may happen that you mistake it to be a “confused” Ertiga. It has its signature vertical tail lamps which are nicely shaped to justify the bulge in the profile. It looks wider and much bigger than the older model. The boot opening is also wide and hence will serve you favour while loading and unloading.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Interior
Entering the cabin will make you realize that this is a typical Maruti car with the style of its door’s opening. The dashboard is a plusher unit which houses a new touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple car play connectivity. This WagonR Vxi addition was a must as the closest competitor Hyundai Santro has also received the same on its top end trim. On the other hand, The WagonR Lxi features a normal music system with LCD display. Steering on the all new WagonR is a functional unit and has controls for music modes, volume, phone dialer, and voice commands. It has a nice shape and looks premium than that of its competitor.
The dashboard is kept quite simple and built to a cost. It is divided into three parts; the centre console and the entire top is in black colour and either side is in a lighter shade of beige. The AC knobs are manual and justify the demand of no automatic climate control unit in this particular segment. It has plenty of storage bins across the gates and below the AC unit to keep your bottles, phones, and stuff. There is no centre armrest, so may need to get that aftermarket.
WagonR seats are also reformed for the 2019 version. The front seats are bolstered well and support passengers on rough roads and twisty roads. However, the non-detachable headrest might be an issue, though not so major. The rear seats are 60:40 split ones and can easily swallow in three passengers. It’s a wider bench than the earlier model thanks to the increase in the overall width of the car. The boot is also large and has space for all your shopping grocerries and ideal size baggage. No issues for your weekend trips’ demands.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Performance
With a new engine’s entry, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R specifications have one more column to describe here. Along with the 1.0-liter k-series engine, Maruti has also given the new 1.2-litre K-12 motor as an option. This engine is directly taken from the bigger siblings like Ignis and Swift. The smaller engine here produces 67 PS at 5500 rpm with 90 Nm of torque @ 3500 rpm. The 1.2-liter produces 83 PS of power at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. Both the engines are paired with manual and AGS transmissions options and this gives the user a good variety to choose from.
Wagon R diesel isn’t coming anytime sooner. With the not so exciting sales figures of Maruti Ignis diesel, Maruti may have no plans to introduce new Wagon R with a diesel engine in the market. There was an expectation of CNG and LPG variants, but they are also not in the scene as of now.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR Safety
This is the factor where Wagon R has really seen a drastic change. The new WagonR 2019 is based on Heartect platform which also underpins the new Maruti Swift. This platform is much safer and lighter than the earlier one and is able to reproduce multiple derivatives of a car for different segments. With that said, the new WagonR specifications now include a variety of new safety features. Driver side airbag and ABS with EBD are now standard across the range.
Along with these features, the base variant i.e. Wagon R Lxi also receives speed alert system, rear parking sensors, child door lock, speed sensitive auto door lock, central locking, security alarm, and seat belt reminder with Buzzer. The top variants also receive a passenger side airbag, front fog lamps, and seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters.
Maruti Wagon R Price and Competition
The all new Maruti Wagon R 2019 will lock its horns with Hyundai Santro and Hyundai Grand i10. Here we are performing WagonR comparison with cars of two different segments from Hyundai. The reason here is the availability of engine options and both these Hyundai cars are based on the same platform. WagonR is available in 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter options. On the other hand, Hyundai Santro has 1.0-liter engine and Grand i10 has the bigger 1.2-litre unit.
The power delivery from the engines of both the manufacturers is almost identical. If you talk about overall fit and finish and quality of interiors, definitely Hyundai’s cars have an upper hand. They look more premium and modern. While considering Santro, WagonR may feel a bit airier and spacious on the inside. Hyundai Grand i10 can easily make 3 people sit at the rear.
It’s always good to have a test drive of your favourite car. That will always help you decide the best car for you.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: Buy or not?
Though, WagonR is now a very good product on budget, Hyundai Grand i10 offers best value for your money. But if you want AGS transmission with 1.2-liter engine, you have to stick with WagonR.
